MUSSOORIE, 7 Aug: A drive to clear plastic waste from the ‘nullahs’ of Mussoorie was initiated by officer trainees of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, today.
The campaign started early in the morning from the ‘nullah’ below Ratan Hotel in Library Bazaar. The members of HOPE (Hands and Practice on Experience) group, constituted specifically for the purpose of solid waste management by LBSNA, joined hands to collecting plastic garbage from the designated area. The officer trainees joined hands with the Nagar Palika in today’s operation.
The President of the Nagar Palika, OP Uniyal also took up the broom and assisted the Nagar Palika workers in collecting the waste from the area.
The officer trainees joined in support of the Nagar Palika workers. Tonnes of waste in the form of plastic bags was collected from the ‘nullah’.
Officer trainee Sarvana Kumar outlined the role of LBSNA. He said that the HOPE group was a voluntary effort initiated under the guidance of Joint Director Padam Vir Singh and faculty member Professor HM Mishra. He added further that it would now be an ongoing process, as the next batch of trainee officers would take over the charge.
Manoj Jain and Ravi Bhagat highlighted the fact that the sustainability of the campaign was very important for the Academy and they would ensure that the entire exercise reached its logical conclusion.
Professor HM Mishra also stated that in the next phase, two monkey proof dustbins would be installed by the Nagar Palika on the Mall Road to segregate the garbage.
He also added that the trainee officers of LBSNA would be enriched by the on hand experience that they would carry to their respective states in the near future.
Nagar Palika President OP Uniyal commended the efforts of the HOPE group and said that their experience and support would go a long way towards energising the Clean Mussoorie Campaign. He added that the drive would be extended to other areas of the town.
He reiterated his commitment to the cause of solid waste management in the hill station. He cited the lack of staff in the Palika as the main reason for the delay in the campaign.
