It is the year the world remembers for assassination attempts on President Reagan and Pope John Paul II, the wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer and Indiana Jones's first outing in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

And 1981 was also a landmark in the life of Teresa Clarke as she slid behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta for her first driving lesson.

Since then presidents and popes have come and gone, the royal marriage has ended and Indiana has had three more adventures - but still there was no driving licence for Mrs Clarke.
