I think this is an important story and would benefit from other NowPublic contributors working on it. I've flagged it as News Wanted and invite others in relevant locations to look for more evidence.

Why is there no damage at all. That sounds really strange. Ok, no people living there i guess, but there should be damage to nature with a 9 On Richter Scale

The USGS are reporting it as 6.3 magnitude!

Vinny,

the only 9.0 recorded that I know of was

Kamchatka

Magnitude 9.0

0
Fairbanks

Anchorage 1964 was 9.3

0
Fairbanks

6.2

The Tibet quake a couple days ago was 6.7. Not much damage there either.

Thanks Mike I would prefer to go by the USGS estimate even though locally it was reported as a 9 magnitude, I have never before seen such a massive difference in magnitude reports.

A pulp mill located at the lake, and mini-submarines involved in an expedition to explore the depths of the world's oldest lake were unaffected. Preliminary reports said in Irkutsk, power and communication supplies were damaged. Minor cracks appeared in the walls of several residential buildings and two hospitals. Half of the power lines running along a hotel-lined highway linking the city and Baikal, the world's largest freshwater lake and a popular tourist destination, were put out of action. Other damage reports are being verified, local officials said. Power workers are trying to restore energy supplies and people are staying outside following a warning by the seismological service that aftershocks could be expected. The pulp mill at Lake Baikal, which had temporarily stopped work "for security reasons," resumed production, a mill spokesman said adding the mill's reserves of chlorine and other hazardous chemicals were secure. But Alexei Nagayev said the mill "is prepared to evacuate if more quakes occur."

As mentioned by others the USGS lists this as 6.3    A 9.0 would have done tremendous damage.  Early reports from far away are often filled with hyperbole.

Gh0s7, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Earthquakes of any size are pretty scary.  Kind of like Gaia reminding us who's in charge.

I looked in Reuters previous stories, and they DID report a 9.0.  They corrected it to 6.3  I did not see a retraction or a mistake message.  So you were correct in your reporting of incorrect information.  So no one should think you were embelishing your title for traffic.
