On the 45th anniversary of the day the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "dream" speech to a quarter of a million people outside the Lincoln Memorial, a U.S. senator from Illinois and presumed Democratic Party nominee for president -- Barack Obama -- prepares to personify at least part of King's dream.

There's symmetry to it.

The reverend's words, which echoed on Aug. 28, 1963, still reverberate in the souls of those who attended the historic event. While many who were with King as he gave the famous speech have died, "Good Morning America," after months of research, tracked down a few survivors.

A Dream Remembered

Gordon Gundrum was a 25-year-old park ranger who was assigned to protect King that day.

"He started speaking, and it was amazing. It was transformed from a type of perhaps festival atmosphere to almost religious," said Gundrum. He said, "The hair on the back of my neck stands" whenever he even tries to describe the day's events.

I was six years old when Martin Luther King gave his  "I Have A Dream Speech".   Fourty-five years later Barack Obama has that same dream.  I can't say at the time I remember Dr. Kings speech.  I can say it would have changed our world as we know it today.  I'm old enough now to know what that speech meant, for those who don't get it you have to be closed minded.  I have a black brother who died recently.  We didn't looked at the color of our skin all we knew is we loved each other.  Other families looked at us like we were out cast.  Our families didn't care because we had a dream also. Our dream wasn't much different than Dr. King's.  We wanted our family and others just to be able to live in peace.  Stop the rioting and name calling.  You'd think after fourty-five years our country would have a lightbulb moment. I feel Barack Obama and Joe Biden can bring this country back to it's roots and Dr. King's dream.

CJaye, I like this story. It's good stuff. Gosh everyone is telling how old they are!  Ok I was 1 year, 1 week old, when MLK gave his, "I have a Dream speech".  I sleep through most of it.   I was more interested at the time of bells, and mobiles above my crib.  I didn't miss it though, as I was born in an age where TV was moving from Black & White to full color.  America took a bit longer to change over.

I know it's funny every story I've read has started out almost the same and telling some ages.  Thank you sweetie for the flag and comment.   I just heard the numbers from Obama's speech 84,000 it was a really good one too.
