Georgia today declared itself at war as Russian planes bombed a Georgian city in an escalation of the conflict over South Ossetia. Moscow claims the fighting has killed more than 2,000 people. Update: Fights go on, Moscow and Tbilisi fight with bombs, tanks and 1000  dead already

US Position:
The U.S. assured that their military personnel in Georgia is completely neutral in the conflict with Russia. The more than one hundred military trainers stationed in Georgia  were "in no way in the conflict between the Russian and Georgian military implicated," said Pentagon spokesman John Dorrian.

Russian president Medwedjew wants to "punish" Georgia
The conflict over South Ossetia appears to be a war between Russia and Georgia . Russian president Medwedjew said, he wants to punish the responsibles in the Area. Apparently Russian tanks are already on the Way to South Ossetia. The timing of the military agression of Georgia may go hand in hand with a possible attack of the Iran by the US.The Chinese are occupied with the Olympic games, for a moment they will keep out. Sakaschwilli/georgia is alive only with US financing.  He has no chance to fight a russian "invasion", and he knew the reaction before. Remember don't provoke the russians to go for holidays in a tank, they may like it, it's their home, like for tourists MCDO.

POPULAR POLITICS-MONEY-OIL Explainer:
=====================================

The problem boils down to Russia's support for South Ossetia's independence, essentially as a way to "stick it" to Georgia for its desire to move closer to the West by wanting to join the EU and NATO. (no south ossetia, no border with europe, no NATO)

Russia is also supporting Abkhazia's quest for independence. Interesting thing is that Russia has issued passports to many South Ossetians (and Abkhazians) and has used that as a rationale for invading Georgia: it needs to protect its citizens.

Russia also viewed quite unfavorably the West's recent recognition of Kosovo's independence, and wants to give the West a taste of its own medicine. "You guys want an independent Kosovo? Okay, then support a free South Ossetia!" Okay, let's free Chechnya!

The fact that there are two important (to the West, anyway) oil and gas pipelines running from Azerbaijan through Georgia adds additional intrigue.

Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, is seen as the top takeover-target of Georgia's military plans.

good stuff:

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Whoops!  Looks like I reported this story a couple of hours too late!

SOLARLIFE

hi christina 123, it's now a double report. I think in such a world event, several reports and opinions are necessary. I focus on European viewpoint. have a nice day or evening.

Christina 123

Evening here in London, SOLARLIFE!

BBC are still presenting it as breaking news.  Same old Russia, always invading!

moonwolf

Christina 123,

Kinda like the same old Britain and its buddy the USA, always invading.

South Ossetians are mostly Russian citizens with Russian passports.  Russia has an obligation to protect its citizens.

The Georgian Government mounted all out attacks hours after it had agreed to a ceasefire and negotiations with the separatists.   It used this bogus "ceasefire" as a cover for a preemptive attack.

SOLARLIFE

moonwolf thanks for flag, "South Ossetians are mostly Russian citizens with Russian passports", right comment. EU has tried long ago, that this people not got thrown out of the area. News now Georgia want to involve US for Help. No for the moment.

Yes, it is and I do hope it may move something and help get us back into the right direction here on planet Earth! Well, maybe only one tiny little step, yet better a tiny little step towards Global Peace and Justice as another step into the opposite direction leading us to more war and injustice! The environment would greatly benefit as well would we achieve peace and Justice for all on this earth! Thank you SOLARLIFE, For your support here! I do appreciate it a lot!

I would imagine that many countries could have a lot to lose if this conflict boils over. I think the other countries would benefit most from stopping this conflict now.

GhOs7, you got the picture, thanks for top comment

Thomas Jefferson

"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent."

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

Russian imperialism and tyranny is under the cover of a fake democracy working towards fascist goals and objectives, ruling people against their will.

SOLARLIFE

Thomas Jefferson (not verified) , thanks for comment "Russian imperialism and tyranny is under the cover of a fake democracy working towards fascist goals and objectives, ruling people against their will."; true or not,  may apply for other power players too. Here the situation is different. I agree almost not to understand, if you don't live in Europe. 90% of the polulation in question has a russian passport,  why should they go away?

Sakaschwilli/georgia is alive only with US financing.  He has no chance to fight the provoked russian "invasion", and he knew the reaction before. Remember don't provoke the russians to go for holidays in a tank, they may like it, it's their home, like for tourists MCDO. Sakaschwilli asked the US for help; they said no. A ceasefire group OSCE, the European Union and the United States will travel to Georgia to reach a ceasefire as quickly as possible. Hope we stay all under control and a new economy has to create opportunities better than war military-industry can provide. As you said when people have work and can make a living, they not tend to use the guns for holidays.

SOLARLIFE

zichi, thanks for comment US viewpoint Georgia; that's why I was writing "European viewpoint: what russian tanks mean!"  As you mention Georgia is not yet a member of NATO, so we are lucky. You did not say anything about timing for a "parallel attack" of Iran now, you have any news? By the way Georgia attacked first. Under intern. Law Georgia would have to declare war, may be I am old fashioned. Popular Opinion Europe: Being unable to cooperate with problems of middle east, europeans not want another permanent conflict war at Georgia. May be geostrategic thinking helps. From Georgia you can attack Russia as well as China; Europe does not  intend to do so. We have learned lessons from second world war.  Think of my comment " Holidays, the russians take the tank, americans prefer the cadillac".  Old but true. Thanks for profound viewpoint running on zichi's "8 cylinder think tank".

SOLARLIFE

zichi, thanks for info, nobody should use the election period in America for uncontrolled adventure....

"Seinfeld sitcom comment" strange:
"I don't think Georgia needs to declare war for something which is happening within its own borders?" That would mean the Georgian government bombed their own country? Imagine Berlin attacking the Freestate of Bavaria from the air, that would finish as the Oktoberfest beer bretzel war, "Why are the prussions so stinky? I wanted just to say other methods exist to coexist.

SOLARLIFE

Thanks Zichi for comment "human rights activist Sergei Kovalov to condemn russias actions" good point, read what I found for strange Identity Crisis at the independant: Saakashvili, a U.S.-educated lawyer, long pledged to restore Tbilisi's rule over South Ossetia and another breakaway province, Abkhazia source: independant

teritenn

OK, I'm still fuzzy on what is going on and why.

This is what I understand so far..

- Georgia is pro-west and wants to be a part of the UN

- Southern Ossetia wants to be part of Russia (WHY?)

- a group blew up an oil pipe line (WHY?)

Again, what is so important in Ossetia that Russia and Georgia are fighting over it?

SOLARLIFE

Hi teritenn, like your comment "what is so important in "nowhere Ossetia ? Really not easy to understand, I agree, that's the reason, I listed the events, you mentioned, separated they make no sense. You made your opinion, I try a free interpretation. "Imagine Chavez would send a guy to govern Cuba, how would America react (...Kennedy Cuba crisis) the same "Bull fight" situation is for Russia, they don't want to get squeezed. The Oil pipeline runs through Georgia shipping place Turkey. Emotional curds in fight with  Turkey.... Oil pipeline here you go....

Escalating conflict

But Georgian officials have accused Russia of escalating the conflict by involving Abkhazia, saying Russia has sent troops and artillery into the region and had begun an operation to storm the Georgian-controlled Kodori gorge in Abkhazia.

"They [the Russian army] have started the operation to storm Kodori gorge," said Shota Utiashvili, an interior ministry spokesman.

Georgia has police stationed in the gorge, protecting a parallel pro-Tbilisi Abkhazian government.

The UN, which has international monitors in the area, has warned of a possible second front opening in the Georgia-Russia conflict.

Separatist authorities in Abkhazia said that they had sent 1,000 troops to the gorge, which Georgian forces control as a strategic foothold in the breakaway Black Sea territory.
