Schechter loses city seat Dorais turfed from school board Bethany Lindsay, North Shore NewsPublished: Saturday, November 15, 2008

THREE newcomers have been elected councillors in the City of North Vancouver.

Rod Clark, Guy Heywood, and Mary Trentadue will join incumbents Pam Bookham, Craig Keating, and Bob Fearnley on council, according to unofficial results on Saturday night.

Incumbent Sam Schechter lost his seat by fewer than 100 votes, finishing in seventh place behind Fearnley. Bookham topped the polls with 11.8 per cent of the vote, followed by Keating.

Six-year trustee and outgoing chairman Chris Dorais loses his seat on the North Vancouver school board.

According to early results, fewer than 18 per cent of registered voters - 5,540 people - cast votes in this election.

Darrell Mussatto ran unopposed in the mayoralty race and was re-elected by acclaim. In the school trusteee race, chairman Chris Dorais lost his seat after finishing in fourth place. Dorais' campaign was embroiled in controversy after it was revealed that he is currently facing drunk-driving charges and had not disclosed the fact to the school district or the board.

Linda Buchanan, Susan Skinner, and Mary Tasi were elected as school trustees for the city.
Results from the city were available within 20 minutes after polling stations closed at 8 p.m.

Well, it's all over for North Vancouver City.  With a very low turnout - only 18 percent we see that things are somewhat ambiguous with only half the Council being represented by fresh new faces, I think that it's too soon to tell whether there will really be a 'new vision' or 'tone' set for North Vancouver!  Now across the Burrard Inlet in Vancouver -- it was a bright picture indeed!  There with just 25% of the public having voted, they still manged to send a very clear message by voting in the Vision Party headed by Gregor Robertson.  What an amazing victory for the party and the few people that went to the polls to try and make a difference -- and what a difference they made.  Here in North Vancouver City ... I'm not sure what the voters were trying to say (or couldn't care less)?  The turnout was expected to be much higher -- but in the end, the vast majority stayed at home or turned their attention to other things!  I hope that the next few months will show that things at our Council are starting to shift a little in favour of more openeness and accountability.  We'll just have to wait and see!  In the meantime, as a North Shore resident, I am much more excited by the results in Vancouver .... and will be tuned in like many folks across Greater Vancouver to see whether Gregor Robertson will be able to make a real change in Vancouver's future with the help of his team and their 'vision' for Vancouver and the people they serve.
