Sex offender alerts plan launched in England

Under a new plan to go into effect in England, parents will be able to enquire with authorities as to whether someone close to their child is a registered sex offender, whether they are a friend, teacher, neighbor or babysitter.
Under the measures, police will be able to tell families if someone with access to a child has convictions or has been previously suspected of abuse.
The year-long projects will be run in Warwickshire, Cambridgeshire, Cleveland, and Hampshire.
The move comes after a campaign for a US-style "Megan's law" - but the scheme falls short of a "right to know".

Now tell me if this is a good thing or not. Sure, you would be able to check out if the person interacting with your child has a good reputation. However, would it be like branding a person with a title when it was probably just something that was filed against him and was just retracted?
