Sun Moon Lake is the largest lake in Taiwan as well as a popular tourist attraction. Situated in Yuchih, Nantou, the area around the Sun Moon Lake is home to the Thao tribe, one of aboriginal tribes in Taiwan.

Sun Moon Lake is located 748 meters above sea level. It is 27 meters deep and has a surface area of approximately 7.93 km².

The Eastern part of the lake is round like the sun, while the Western part is shaped like a crescent moon - hence the name "Sun Moon Lake".

The beauty of Sun Moon Lake is found in the surrounding mountains.From the lake, tier upon tier of countless peaks can be seen rising up into the sky.

日月潭 是台湾著名的风景区，是台湾八景中的绝胜，也是台湾岛上唯一的天然湖泊，其天然风姿可与杭州西湖媲美。湖面海拔740米，面积7.73平方公里，湖周长35公里，平均水深40米。潭中有一小岛名珠仔屿，亦名珠仔山，海拔745米。以此岛为界，北半湖形状如圆日，南半湖形状如一弯新月，日月潭因此而得名。
日月潭本来是两个单独的湖泊，後来因为发电需要，在下游筑坝，水位上升，两湖就连为一体了。潭中有一个小岛，远看好像浮在水面上的一颗珠子，故名珠仔岛，现在叫光华岛。以此岛为界，北半湖形如日轮，南半状似上弦之月，因名日月潭。旧台湾八景之一的「双潭秋月」就是由此而来。
日月潭之美在于环湖重峦叠峰，湖面辽阔，潭水澄澈；一年四季，晨昏景色各有不同。七月平均气温不高於摄氏二十二度，一月不低于摄氏十五度，夏季清爽宜人，为避暑胜地。
